An Ace Language Guide for Test Takers
If you are planning to take the Pearson Test of English in 2025 or beyond, staying updated with the latest changes is essential.
From 7 August 2025, Pearson introduced several updates to the PTE exam to make it more authentic and effective in assessing real English language skills. These changes apply to both PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI.
At Ace Language, we believe that informed preparation is the key to success. This guide explains what has changed, what remains the same, and how test takers should adapt to the updated PTE format.
What Remains the Same?
Despite the updates, the core foundations of the PTE exam remain unchanged.
- Exam Structure
The test is still divided into three sections:
- Speaking & Writing
- Reading
- Listening
- Scoring Criteria
Scores are based on your overall English language proficiency, including fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Your accent does not affect your score.
- Result Timeline
Results are usually available within 2–5 days after taking the exam.
What Has Changed from 7 August 2025?
Two New Question Types Introduced
From August 2025, two new tasks were added to the Speaking & Writing section.
1. Summarise Group Discussion
In this task, test takers listen to a short group discussion involving multiple speakers and then provide a spoken summary covering the main ideas.
- Skills assessed:
- Listening comprehension
- Speaking fluency
- Ability to summarise information
- Prompt length: Up to 3 minutes
- Time to answer: 2 minutes
2. Respond to a Situation
In this task, test takers are given a short real-life scenario in text form and must respond as if they are in that situation.
- Skills assessed:
- Functional language use
- Spoken interaction
- Pronunciation and fluency
- Prompt length: Up to 60 words
- Time to answer: 40 seconds
Increased Human Oversight in Scoring
While PTE continues to use AI-based scoring, Pearson introduced additional human review for selected tasks to reduce over-reliance on memorised or formulaic responses.
The following tasks may now receive human oversight:
- Describe Image
- Retell Lecture
- Respond to a Situation
- Summarise Group Discussion
- Summarise Written Text
- Write Essay
- Summarise Spoken Text
This change encourages original, clear, and meaningful responses that reflect real language use.
Test Format Adjustments
To accommodate the new question types:
- The number of question types increased from 20 to 22
- The total test duration increased to 2 hours and 15 minutes
(Previously around 2 hours)
User Interface (UI) Enhancements
Pearson also introduced several interface improvements to enhance the test experience:
- A beep sound to signal when to start speaking in Repeat Sentence
- Reduced font sizes for better on-screen clarity
- A circular progress bar for clearer time tracking
- Live audio waveform during speaking tasks
- Microphone rechecks to ensure audio quality
These enhancements aim to reduce technical uncertainty and improve clarity on test day.

How Should Test Takers Prepare After These Changes?
Practise the New Tasks
Even though only two new question types were added, they assess important real-life communication skills. Familiarity with these tasks is essential.
Use Updated Practice Materials
Practising with outdated mock tests may leave you unprepared for:
- New task formats
- Updated UI elements
- Revised time distribution
Always ensure your preparation reflects the post-August 2025 format.
Avoid Over-Reliance on Templates
With increased human oversight, overly repetitive or memorised responses may be less effective. Responses should be relevant, clear, and personalised.
Manage Time Wisely
Although the test duration increased, more tasks are included. Effective time management remains critical across all sections.
