PTE Core

If Canada is your goal, you have probably heard about PTE Core.

It is the newest English proficiency test accepted by the Canadian government for permanent residency and citizenship. It is faster, fully computer-based, and many test takers find it less stressful than traditional English tests.

But PTE Core is still new, and a lot of people are confused about what it is, how it works, and how to prepare for it.

What Is PTE Core?

PTE Core is a computer-based English language test developed by Pearson Education. It was launched to meet a specific need: proving English proficiency for Canadian immigration purposes.

It tests all four English skills:

  • Speaking
  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Listening

The full test takes approximately 2 hours to complete. Unlike some other tests, there is no human examiner. An AI-powered scoring system grades all your responses. This keeps the results fast, consistent, and completely unbiased.

PTE Core is officially recognised by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada), which is the Canadian government body that handles all immigration applications.

What Is PTE Core Used For?

PTE Core has one main purpose: Canadian immigration. Here is exactly where you can use it.

Canadian Permanent Residency (PR)

If you are applying for Canadian permanent residency through any economic immigration program, you need an IRCC-approved English test. PTE Core is one of the accepted options.

This includes programs like:

  • Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades)
  • Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)
  • Atlantic Immigration Program
  • Other economic immigration streams

Your PTE Core score maps directly to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, which IRCC uses to assess your English proficiency in immigration applications.

Canadian Citizenship

If you are already a permanent resident and applying to become a Canadian citizen, PTE Core is accepted by IRCC as proof of your English ability.

Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

If you have studied in Canada and are now applying for a Post-Graduate Work Permit, you can use PTE Core to prove your English skills as part of that application.

Important: If you are planning to study at a Canadian university or college, PTE Core is NOT the right test. For university admissions in Canada, you need PTE Academic. Always check the specific requirement of your program or visa pathway before booking.

PTE Core vs PTE Academic - What Is the Difference?

The biggest advantage of PTE Core is the speed of results. You typically get your score report in just 2 business days. For people with tight immigration deadlines, this matters enormously.

PTE Core also uses AI scoring with no human examiner, which removes the possibility of bias in your speaking assessment. Many test takers prefer this, especially those who feel nervous speaking with a stranger in an IELTS interview.

PTE Core Test Format

PTE Core is split into 3 parts. The total test time is approximately 2 hours.

Part 1 - Speaking and Writing

Duration: 50 to 65 minutes Number of question types: 7

This is the longest section of the test. It covers both speaking and writing together. All speaking is done through a computer microphone, and all writing is typed on a keyboard.

Here is what you will face in this section:

Part 2 - Reading

Duration: 27 to 37 minutes Number of question types: 5

In this section you read passages and answer questions. The texts in PTE Core use everyday, general English rather than academic language.

Part 3 - Listening

Duration: 22 to 37 minutes Number of question types: 7

You listen to audio recordings of conversations, announcements, and discussions, then answer questions. The content in PTE Core is practical and everyday rather than academic.

Why ACE PTE

How to Prepare for PTE Core

PTE Core rewards test takers who understand the format and practise systematically. Here is how to prepare effectively.

Understand Every Question Type First

Before you do any timed practice, study each of the 19 question types. Know what each one asks you to do, how it is scored, and how long you have. This foundation saves a huge amount of time later.

Train Your Listening Skills Daily

The Listening section is one of the most challenging for many Bangladeshi students. Practise listening to natural English from podcasts, news broadcasts, and everyday conversations. Write from Dictation especially requires sharp listening and accurate spelling.

Know Your Target CLB Level

Before you start preparing, find out exactly what CLB level your immigration program requires. Then you know exactly which PTE Core score you are aiming for. This focused approach is far more effective than preparing without a target.

Focus on the Writing Sections

The Write Email and Summarise Written Text tasks have a strict word count. Practice staying within the limits while still covering all the key points. Write concisely.

Practise Speaking Without Hesitating

In PTE Core, fluency matters more than a perfect accent. Pauses, filler sounds like “um” and “uh,” and long silences hurt your score. Practise speaking smoothly, even if you make a small grammar error.

Take a Scored Practice Test

Pearson offers official Scored Practice Tests that simulate the real exam and give you a predicted CLB score. Take one early in your preparation. It shows you where your weaknesses are so you can focus your study time on what actually matters.

FAQ

How is PTE Core different from PTE Academic?

PTE Core is designed for Canadian immigration only. PTE Academic is for university admissions and Australian and New Zealand immigration visas. The two tests use different question types. PTE Core uses everyday, general English tasks like writing an email and responding to real-life situations. PTE Academic uses academic tasks like writing essays and summarising lectures. If you are applying for a Canadian PR visa, choose PTE Core. If you are applying to study abroad, choose PTE Academic.

What CLB score do I need for Express Entry?

For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, you need a minimum of CLB 7 in all four skills. For the Canadian Experience Class, you need CLB 7 in some NOC categories and CLB 5 in others. Always check IRCC’s website for the exact requirement of your specific program.

How long is a PTE Core score valid for?

Your PTE Core score is valid for 2 years from the date of your test. After two years, IRCC will not accept it. Make sure your score will still be within that 2-year window when your immigration application is processed.

What is the difference between PTE Core and IELTS for Canadian immigration?

Both tests are accepted by IRCC. The main differences are: PTE Core uses AI scoring with no human examiner, while IELTS General has a face-to-face speaking interview. PTE Core results come in typically 2 business days, while IELTS takes 3-13 days depending on the format. Many students prefer PTE Core because there is no human bias and results come faster.

How do I prepare for PTE Core in Bangladesh?

The most effective preparation includes: studying all question types in detail, practising listening to natural spoken English daily, building your writing speed and accuracy, taking timed mock tests, and working with experienced coaches who know the PTE format. At Ace Language in Dhaka, we offer structured PTE Core preparation with personalised feedback to help you hit your target CLB score.
